Comfort & Joy (Jim Grimsley) Ford McKinney is a devastatingly handsome, successful doctor, raised in an old Savannah family among good breeding and money. His longtime boyfriend, Dan Krell, is a shy hospital administrator with a painful childhood past. When the holidays arrive, they decide it's time to go home together. But the depth of their commitment is tested when Ford's parents cannot reconcile themselves to their son's choices, and Dan's secrets are exposed. Comfort and Joy is a poetic and finely-wrought novel that explores the difficult journey two men make toward love.

A MIND OF ITS OWN: A CULTURAL HISTORY OF THE PENIS (David M. Friedman) Setting out to "make intellectual and emotional sense of a man's relationship with his defining organ," David Friedman moves from highbrow to lowbrow in this lighthearted but substantive cultural history. Successively viewed as a life source, a symbol of a sacred covenant with God, an emblem of shame, an instrument of domination, a mere prop for the pharmaceutical companies, and finally, as simply a means of penetration-the penis has always been at the core of Western man's (and woman's) cultural evolution. With such luminaries as Leonardo da Vinci, Sigmund Freud, Walt Whitman, and Norman Mailer marking their territory on the subject, A Mind of Its Own is an intelligent and often hilarious account of man's complicated bond with his closest friend.

MY LUCKY STAR (Joe Keenan). The glamorous Hollywood novel gets a sharp send-up as a smart drawing-room comedy crossed liberally with farce in this third offering from a successful television writer. Struggling playwrights Philip and Claire are summoned to Tinseltown by their calculating friend Gilbert to be screenwriters for a legendary diva, Diana Malenfant, and her megastar son, Stephen Donato. When the budding screenwriters are revealed as inadvertent plagiarists, Philip is forced to ghostwrite the memoirs of Diana's toxic has-been sister, Lily, and turn over all potentially damaging pages to Diana and Stephen. Lily is threatening to expose the silver screen's best-kept secret, that Stephen is gay. All are coexisting in a glittery detente until L.A.'s most fashionable madam gets the goods on the entire cast and demands a production credit, prodding the ever-capable Claire to devise the most madcap of rescues. The witty banter, zany plot twists, and colorful, likable characters (even the dastardly villains) provide a delight for fans of brainy comedy. If the ghost of Noel Coward isn't pleased, Frasier's is. (Kaite Mediatore, BOOKLIST)

Lure, The (Felice Picano) In 1979, Felice Picano rocketed to fame with the publication of this shocking, controversial thriller. Riveting and candid in its depiction of the gay sexual subculture of the era, and praised by Stephen King as "Explosive...Felice Picano is one hell of a writer." The Lure thrusts young widower Noel Hathaway into a dark universe of physical and psychological violence; an unwilling lure used by the police to unmask an elusive killer.

June Special

Wicked
Wednesday, June 16, 8:00 PM
Music Hall at Fair Park, Dallas

Long before that girl from Kansas arrives in Munchkinland, two girls meet in the land of Oz. One - born with emerald green skin - is smart, fiery, and misunderstood; the other is beautiful, ambitious, and very popular. How these two grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good makes for “the most complete and completely satisfying new musical in a long time.” (USA Today).

FOR GOOD (my fav!) by original cast members Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel.

Bill & Andy (E BALC) and Darwin & Dirk (MAIN FLOOR) are going. Let them know if you plan to join them!

EMAIL RECEIVED 6/9 AM: "A MASSIVE rainstorm moved through our area on Wednesday night/Thursday morning. The rain was so immensly heavy that the dam that holds in our beloved pond has been breached. The entire pond has drained and the landscape surrounding the creek has been transformed. As of Thursday morning, we see no way that the east side of the property can be accessed by any of our campers.

"It is with heavy hearts we must cancel our upcoming Mud / Wrestling weekend, scheduled for June 11th thru June 13th. The majority of the activities we had planned were to take place on the now inaccessable side of the property and the now drained pond.

"For those of you that would still like to come out to the ranch, we will, as always, do our very best to ensure you have a fun and memorable weekend. Please keep in mind that we will be in the process of assessing and repairing the unbelievable damage caused by this natural disaster.

"If you have any questions or concerns, call us at 903-479-4189 and thank you all for your understanding and support. We will be updating our website, http://www.campcirclej.com as soon as we can."

A Density Of Souls (Christopher Rice) is the story of four high school friends in present-day New Orleans who are torn apart by envy, passion, and a secret murder. Meredith, Brandon, Greg, and Stephen quickly discover the fragile boundaries between friendship and betrayal as they enter high school and form new allegiances. Brandon and Greg gain popularity as football jocks and Meredith joins the bulimic in-crowd, while Stephen is treated as an outcast and is the target of homophobia. Then two violent deaths disrupt the core of what they once shared. Five years later the friends are drawn back together and what was held to be a tragic accident is discovered to be murder. Without One Plea (Ben Mitchell) When Chet Monroe is offered a job as a law professor at a university near his hometown of Mission Springs, Mississippi, he jumps at the chance to get away from the bustle of New York City and start a new life. The small town is happy to welcome home a successful native son. Chet doesn't come home alone, however. He brings with him his longtime lover, Drew Weatherly, who takes a job at the local bank. The men know that the town may not be accustomed to an openly gay couple, but their plan is to slowly gain acceptance, easing the neighborhood into an understanding of their relationship. Everything seems to be going well until the local Baptist minister, Brother Gene, begins to suspect that the two men are more than just friends, and he's squarely against allowing them to work their way into the community on their own terms. As tensions begin to rise, Chet is accused of the unthinkable: raping a local boy he befriended. Now, winning over the community is no longer a choice but a necessity if he's to keep his freedom in Without One Plea.

The Low Road (by James Lear). Robert Louis Stevenson's Kidnapped has long been considered a masterpiece of high adventure. In The Low Road, James Lear reinvents this classic as a satirical, queer, coming-of-age story. In 1705 Scotland, young Charles Gordon reaches adulthood ignorant of his family's heroic past in the Jacobite Rebellion. He sets out to discover the truth about his father, but instead is kidnapped by mercenaries and sold into slavery as the plaything of a group of corrupt military officials. But Charlie’s talents, in and out of bed, win him powerful friends as well as dangerous foes. The false priest, Lebecque, violent Captain Robert, depraved General Wilmott — all contribute to Charlie’s "education." Eventually leading a makeshift army of sex-crazed layabouts, Charlie faces the might of the English forces. Will he triumph, or is it better to retreat to the safety of his sybaritic lifestyle? James Lear expertly interweaves spies and counterspies, scheming servants and sadistic captains, tavern trysts and prison orgies, into this delightfully erotic work that can take its place alongside his acclaimed novels The Back Passage and Hot Valley.

My Trip Down the Pink Carpet (Leslie Jordan) Leslie Jordan is a small man with a giant propensity for scene stealing. Best known for his bravura recurring role as Karen's nemesis, Beverley Leslie, on Will & Grace (for which he won a Best Guest Actor in a Comedy Series Emmy in 2006), he has also made memorable appearances on Ally McBeal, Boston Public, Monk, and Murphy Brown.

Raised in a conservative family in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Leslie -- who describes himself as "the gayest man I know" -- boarded a Greyhound bus bound for LA with $1,200 sewn into his underpants and never looked back. His pocket-sized physique and inescapable talent for high camp paved the way to a lucrative and varied career in commercials and on television. Along the way he immersed himself in writing for the stage, and his one-man testimonials have become cult off-Broadway hits. But with success came dangerous temptations: a self-proclaimed former substance abuser and sexaholic, Leslie has spent time in jail and struggled to overcome his addictions and self-loathing.

My Trip Down the Pink Carpet is a rollicking, fast-paced collection of stories, served up with wit, panache, and plenty of biting asides. Filled with comically overwrought childhood agonies, offbeat observations, and revealing celebrity encounters -- from Boy George to George Clooney -- it delivers a fresh, laugh-out-loud take on Hollywood, fame, addiction, gay culture, and learning to love oneself.

A Single Man (Christopher Isherwood)
When A Single Man was originally published, it shocked many by its frank, sympathetic, and moving portrayal of a gay man in midlife. George, the protagonist, is adjusting to life on his own after the sudden death of his partner, and determines to persist in the routines of his daily life; the course of A Single Man spans twenty-four hours in an ordinary day. An Englishman and a professor living in suburban Southern California, he is an outsider in every way, and his internal reflections and interactions with others reveal a man who loves being alive despite everyday injustices and loneliness. Wry, suddenly manic, constantly funny, surprisingly sad, this novel catches the texture of life itself.
